Question

Does anyone know if filming DV without sound being recorded as well is possible, and if so does this either improve the quality of image or give you longer recording time (as more DV tape space is available for images as sound is eliminated)?????

I don't think its possible with your average DV camera. You can choose 12bit or 16bit audio capture tho

Anything is possible, although even if you plug an external mic into the camera and turn the mic off, the camera will record silence, which is still more than nothing.

No. Image quality is determined by several other factors including the CCD (the chip that converts light to a digital info), tape format, and lenses.

Interesting notion, but this concept won't work on a video camera, although it certainly applies to a hard drive. AVI, MOV, MPG, etc. files that do not include audio are significantly smaller.

    Cool

With iMovie you can drag the audio to the trash can. Surely this capability is available on more expensive editors.

    Hey,

If I want something silent, I shoot it, then just extract the audio, which is a basic function in editors like iMovie. It strips the clip of all audio and gives you more space, but it isn't much, so don't bother trying to do it practical, just leave the audio and get rid of it later.

I see what you're asking; whether you can avoid taking up DV space with unnecessary sound and fill it instead with extra footage.

What a good question! That's the spirit!

I guess you'll have to try it and see. If you do M0ds idea, and see if you can fit more on the tape with 12bit audio, let us know what happened
